Why science lab practicals matter for SSLC and PU board exams in Karnataka. The City Academy and City Composite PU College's Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science labs in Kalaburagi.

Science Labs at The City Academy — Why Practicals Matter

In Karnataka, practical examinations contribute directly to SSLC and PU board marks. A student who does not know how to perform a titration, observe a slide under a microscope, or verify Ohm's law in a lab setting loses marks that cannot be recovered in theory papers. At The City Academy and City Composite PU College, Kalaburagi, we take lab work seriously.

What Labs We Have

Physics Lab (Std VIII–PU II)
  • Verification of Ohm's Law, measurement of resistance
  • Refraction experiments (glass slabs, prisms)
  • Optical bench experiments (lenses, focal lengths)
  • PU II: Potentiometer, metre bridge, semiconductor diodes
Chemistry Lab (Std VIII–PU II)
  • Acid-base titrations with proper burettes, pipettes, and indicators
  • Qualitative salt analysis (identification of anions and cations)
  • Organic chemistry reactions (saponification, esterification)
  • Safety equipment: fume hood, gloves, splash goggles
Biology Lab (Std IX–PU II)
  • Microscope slides: onion peel cells, cheek cells, blood smear
  • Dissection: earthworm, frog (per KSEEB/KPUE curriculum)
  • Germination experiments, photosynthesis demonstration
Computer Science Lab (Std VI–PU II)
  • Individual computer per student (no sharing)
  • Python programming from Std X onwards
  • PU II: Object-oriented programming concepts

Why Practicals Are Not Optional

Some schools in Kalaburagi treat practical sessions as a formality — students copy lab records from the previous year and never actually perform the experiment. This is not acceptable preparation for SSLC or PU board practicals, where an examiner is physically present to observe.

At The City Academy, practical sessions are conducted as the board exam requires — actual experiments, actual observation, actual results recorded in real time.

For PU Science Students

Practical examinations in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (for PCMB) carry significant marks in the Karnataka PU board result. Students who have done the experiments many times during PU I and II perform with confidence. Those who have only seen diagrams in a textbook do not.

Our science exhibition every year — open to parents — showcases student projects from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It is the most vivid demonstration of what lab education produces.
