PCMB vs PCMC in PU Science — Which Stream Is Right for Your Child?

When a student joins PU Science after SSLC, the first decision is which subject combination to take: PCMB or PCMC. Both lead to KCET. But they lead to different KCET categories — and different career paths. Here is a clear comparison.

PCMB — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology

Target exams: NEET (Medical), KCET Medical, KCET Engineering (via Maths) Career paths:

• MBBS, BDS (after NEET)
• BAMS, BHMS, Pharmacy, Nursing (after NEET)
• B.E./B.Tech (after KCET, using Maths + Physics + Chemistry)
• B.Sc. Agriculture, B.Sc. Bioinformatics, Biotechnology

PCMB is more versatile. A student who takes PCMB can appear for NEET and KCET Engineering in the same year. Options remain open until the final results come in. Who should choose PCMB: Students who are interested in medicine, biology, or want to keep both engineering and medical options open. Also ideal for students who are not yet decided — PCMB is the safer choice when uncertain.

PCMC — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science

Target exams: JEE (IIT/NIT), KCET Engineering, KCET CS-specific programmes Career paths:

• B.E./B.Tech Computer Science, Electronics, Mechanical (after KCET/JEE)
• B.Sc. Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Cybersecurity
• Software engineering, IT, and tech careers
• Defence (NDA) — requires Maths + Physics

PCMC is more focused. A student who chooses PCMC cannot appear for NEET or KCET Medical (Biology is required for those). The trade-off is deeper Computer Science preparation. Who should choose PCMC: Students who are clearly interested in engineering or technology careers and are not considering medicine.
